Once a fortnight a team of eight volunteers present an Assembly in Husbands Bosworth Church of England Primary School. The assembly is called Open the Book, the book being the Bible.
Open the Book is a national project run by the Bible Society. It started 25 years ago in one Primary school in Bedford  It is now in over 3000 schools with 9000 storytellers. It has now reached Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, and more recently, in Guatemala and Argentina.
It began in Husbands Bosworth 14 years ago, by the then curate of All Saints’, Reverend Andy Rhoades and is still very much supported by All Saints’ Church.
It is a three-year rolling programme which we present every two weeks during the collective act of worship, which backs up the school curriculum and the Christian values of the school.
We share Bible stories with the children through the power of storytelling, in a dramatic way,  dressed in costume and with the occasional use of PowerPoint. This helps to uphold the legal requirement of a daily act of worship, and we use the children themselves where this is appropriate. The stories are interactive and fun and the children enjoy them as much as we do. One  new pupil was heard to ask recently why Open the Book was not every week, rather than every two weeks!
The project has been well received by Ofsted and SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools).
